Sheikh Maher Hammoud: Human Rights Begin with Struggle Against Tyranny, Rooted in Islamic Law

Tehran – Human rights, according to Islamic teachings, begin with resisting tyranny and corruption, Sheikh Maher Hammoud, a leading Lebanese scholar, said at the 44th pre-conference of the International Conference on Humanity and Freedom.

The virtual session, organized by the Constitutional Council Research Institute, focused on “Guaranteeing Individual and Social Freedoms with Emphasis on Thoughts of Ayatollah Khamenei.”

Challenging Western claims that human rights are purely a Western concept, Sheikh Hammoud asserted that Islam encompasses some of the most advanced principles of human rights.

He criticized US actions in Vietnam, Korea, South Africa, Iran, and Syria, as well as its collaboration with Israel in Gaza, saying, “Human rights hold no real place in Western interactions with the world.”

Referring to Imam Khomeini’s labeling of the US as the “Great Satan,” Sheikh Hammoud said this was not rhetoric but a historic initiative whose principles are upheld by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

He highlighted that US and Western sanctions have deprived Iranian citizens of fundamental rights, including access to scientific and technological resources.

Sheikh Hammoud stressed that protecting individual rights within society is a vital tool to counter foreign aggression. “Despite witnessing the suffering of the Iranian people, the US punishes them for expressing anti-Israel sentiments,” he said.

As imam of Al-Quds Mosque in Sidon, Lebanon, he added that resisting US policies is “the best service to humanity,” noting Khamenei’s prioritization of opposing foreign interference. Citing a US official’s admission of $500 million spent to undermine Iran and the resistance, he said the effort failed, and the Iranian people remained steadfast.

Sheikh Hammoud affirmed that human rights in Islamic law are fully protected in Iran. “If the Islamic Republic eliminates US and Western interference, it will achieve the highest form of human rights, serving as a global model,” he said.
